Aaron, 14, sells car on work experience

Lings ShowroomHe may still be three years away from being allowed to drive a car of his own, but 14-year-old Aaron Mills showed he has a big future as a salesman after selling a BMW on his first day of work experience in a used car showroom.

Aaron’s success in getting the £2,295 asking price for the car has now landed him a Saturday job at the Lings Honda dealership, in Lowestoft.

Phil Reid, used car sales manager at the Riverside Road showroom, said: “He had been here for six weeks doing one day a week, but he had been round different departments doing different jobs and this was the first time I got a chance to speak to him. He was very, very switched on. I talked to him and showed him how to work the computer system and I told him if a customer came in, to go and speak to them. And the first customer that came in, he introduced himself, did everything properly and professionally. He did a deal on a part-exchange and he got it.”

Aaron is in year 10 and is enrolled on the entrepreneurial enterprise course at Kirkley High School. The course is designed to explore elements of entrepreneurism and help students develop the attitudes to succeed. Cheryl Willis, Kirkley High’s enterprise advisor, said: “The work in the classroom has built on the development of enterprising attitudes and this shone brightly through when he sold a car at Lings Honda.”

As a reward for his sale Aaron was presented £50 from Lings when he got back to school. Aaron said: “The money makes me happy and it was a good feeling negotiating and selling the car. It’s good to have people believe in you.”
